History of St Albert
The city’s rich history dates back to 1866 when Father Lacombe, a French-Canadian missionary, established the Misericordia Hospital and founded the village of St. Albert. Initially called “St. St Albert casino Albert de Barré,” it was named after Pope Leo XIII and Bishop Alexandre-Antonin Taché. Over time, the town grew, and in 1906, the Alberta Government passed a charter to incorporate the community as a town. In 1961, St. Albert achieved city status.

St. Albert is situated approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Edmonton’s downtown area, nestled within the North Saskatchewan River Valley.
